2014 World Championships - Pairs' Free Skate

This is Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy's last chance to win a World gold medal and more than probably, Germany's last presence in the spotlight for a while. Will they succeed or is it time for a new pair of World champions?

Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres give us a scare with a terrifying fall right at the end, a mistake you can see he's more than sorry for. The rest of the programme is very good despite a very small error in the Triple Twist. Their music is a mash-up of the soundtracks of Angels and Demons and Requiem for a Dream. Their score: 119.89. Overall: 183.90.

The jumps, the lifts, the spins, the interpretation... Kirsten Moore-Towers/Dylan Moscovitch are in perfect sync. They even do a risky lift with only one leg on the ice. The only mistake is her hand on the ice while landing the thrown Triple Salchow. Great speed as well while looking like veritable movie stars on Nino Rota's music medley. They get 136.21 points. Overall: 205.52.

Cheng Peng/Hao Zhang are a very classy pair and are not afraid of daring elements, like that last lift on one leg. She falls on the side-by-side Triple Toeloops and the side-by-side spins look dodgy, but the other spins and especially the Death Spiral are excellent. Their hymn to the Yellow River is so convincing you almost want to go see it in person. Their score: 123.15. Overall: 194.83.

These are the Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy we know so well - confident, strong and all in all, brilliant - and we're glad we get to see them at their best one last time. Skating on The Nutcracker, she singles the side-by-side Double Axel, but that doesn't matter, not in the eyes of their fans anyway. You can bet Germany and the world will never forget these two. They get 145.86 points. Overall: 224.88.

Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov couldn't possibly stay perfect forever, so she puts a hand down on the thrown Triple Flip and he loses the rhythm on the side-by-side spins. Their presentation however never wavers - they are constantly in character. Their score: 139.77. Overall: 215.92.

From the quirkiness to the terror to the glory, Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford look fabulous in this version of Alice in Wonderland on ice. Technically though, she falls on the thrown Triple Lutz. They get 133.83 points. Overall: 210.84. P.S.: The cutest squeak of joy ever from Meagan!

Germany's national anthem is played one more time as Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy retire in full glory. Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov tango their way to the silver medal, Adams Family style, while the trip down the rabbit hole brings Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford onto the third step of the podium. Congratulations to all of them!
