GPF 2014 - The Short Dance

We kick off the second day of the Grand Prix Final with the ice dancers' first event - the short dance. The game hasn't changed much since last year, given that Canada and the United States are still the two main rivals, but the players are definitely new. Let's see if Chock/Bates and Weaver/Poje manage to continue with the legacy of Davis/White and Virtue/Moir.

When you're skating with your sibling, you can't really present love stories, which is why Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani's paso doble looks a bit colder than others. However, being limited means they have to work harder to find other ways to approach the music, which shows versatility. It also helps that they know the technicalities of the dance in and out. Their score: 63.90.

Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron's dance is much sexier, but also filled with errors: he stumbles during a transition while she completely loses her first position during the twizzles and almost stumbles too at the very end. The cheers coming from the French supporters is deafening though. They get 61.48 points.

Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje's approach to paso doble is perfect; they are both domineering, as they should be in a dance in which both partners are trying to defy each other. She, in particular, looks all kinds of fierce. The outfits are gorgeous too. At least today, there's nothing to reproach them. Their score: 71.34.

Madison Chock/Evan Bates's Don Quixote strays from the traditional paso doble and leans towards a more classical version, which gives it more nuances; instead of being tense throughout, it's almost cheerful at times. Unluckily, she falls at the very end and drags him down with her. They get 65.06 points.

The fact that Madison Chock is close to tears at the end of the competition says it all. After the major mistake the Americans had, it's hard to believe they can catch up to Weaver and Poje, whose routine was fabulous tonight. On third are Maia and Alex Shibutani with a programme done by the book. Stay tuned for the final.
