Shanghai 2015 - Russia vs. Japan (Ladies Free)

It's a Russian world at the ladies' free skate this year as Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Elena Radionova have set themselves up to occupy the first two positions of the podium. Japan is close behind though with all their three skaters currently on places three, four and five.

Gracie Gold looks more confident today than she did in the short programme. Her only mistake is stepping out of the second triple Lutz. She makes such good use of her body language too. The music is from Phantom of the Opera. Her score: 128.23. Overall: 188.96.

Mae Berenice Meite is experiencing some issues with her knee, which is why so many of her jumps look sketchy. The only big mistake though is double-footing the landing of the triple Loop. Presentation-wise, I'm not convinced by the costume - it looks rather generic and not entirely fit for the music. She gets 105.67 points. Overall: 162.75.

Ashley Wagner's Moulin Rouge is my favourite routine of the season. It's theatrical, and she expresses the angst and finality of the tale very well. The costume is perfect, down to the replica of the diamond necklace worn by Nicole Kidman in the movie. She makes no errors today, probably because she's got nothing to lose at this point. Her score: 127.20. Overall: 185.01.

As a grown-up kid who still loves Disney stories, I really appreciate Polina Edmunds skating to Tinkerbell, but there are so many nuances in the music that the choreography never picks up on. Because of that, the routine comes off as duller than it should. Her costumes are pure art though. She gets 116.12 points. Overall: 177.83. P.S.: Love the dynamics between the three Americans; looking forward to the World Team Trophy.

Zijun Li is as graceful as ever on the piano tunes of Moon River. The ice fills with toys and flowers at the end of her performance even though she falls on the double Toeloop and second triple Flip. Her score: 103.39. Overall: 165.22.

Satoko Miyahara skates on Miss Saigon, a musical that tells the sad story of an Asian woman who falls in love with an American soldier. The second half of the performance is better than the first both in technical and interpretation. She falls on the triple Lutz. She gets 126.58 points. Overall: 193.60.

Elena Radionova struggles with her routine. She masks it well, but her weariness is obvious in the elements, most of which are flawed. She doesn't make any big errors though. She did say that she wasn't feeling in the best of shapes, which might have something to do with it. Her score: 121.96. Overall: 191.47.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva is the new World champion

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva keeps her cool despite an early mistake of over-rotating the triple Lutz. Her hand movements are lovely and carefully thought-of, of course, as they are an important part of any Arabian dance. She gets 132.74 points. Overall: 210.36.

Rika Hongo has never been better. She has original spins and amazing jumps that are in perfect sync with the music. There's plenty of elements from Carmen in the choreography as well. Great job. Her score: 122.41. Overall: 184.58. P.S.: What happened?

Kanako Murakami always looks worried when she's under pressure. At least with a routine like Phantom of the Opera, she can channel that into the interpretation. She singles out of the triple Salchow and gets too low on the double Axel to be able to extend her free leg out. She gets 114.18 points. Overall: 179.66.

The top three places shuffle a bit, as Elena Radionova takes the bronze and Satoko Miyahara manages to grab the silver medal. Congratulations to Elena Tuktamysheva, who has just won her first World title.
