Dance for Gold, Part 2

Team USA finished the short dance on first position, against all odds. But will the relatively new couple manage to keep their position in front of the more experienced Canadians? And who will take their first International Bronze Medal home?

  • Xiaoyang Yu/Chen Wang's costumes looked so dramatic...and then the funny music started. As it turns out things do get a bit more serious towards the end of the program, although many people probably have no idea what the story is about as the Chinese couple are not so good at selling it. They get 68.61 points. Overall: 113.76. P.S.: I still want a fluffy Panda cap.
  • Le Chanson des Vieux Amants really is the best FD Pernelle Carron/Lloyd Jones have showed us so far. If they keep on this path of original and difficult elements, while improving their presentation skills, they will reach a podium at some point. Their score: 84.24. Overall: 138.97. P.S.: Looks like team France decided to wear costumes outside the ice-rink as well - were those The Chipmunks?
  • Cathy Reed/Chris Reed's program is a tribute to The Beatles and it makes Japanese fans give them a standing ovation. It was not as masterfully skated as Pechalat/Bourzat's tribute to The Rolling Stones, but it was nice enough to give them a shot at a medal. They get 85.40 points. Overall: 141.75. P.S.: Don't you love how the Japanese skaters know each other's choreography?
  • Ksenia Monko/Kirill Khavialin are impressive for a couple that skates in the shadow of not one, but two generations of Russian ice-dancers. Their flamenco routine could easily pass for a proper lesson on ice, but they still have a lot to learn about presentation. Their score: 89.80. Overall: 149.27. P.S.: Check out Maxim Trankov's sexy new flamenco pose.
  • All the magic was lost for Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje after that unfortunate fall that will cost them dearly. Nonetheless, this remains the most poetic program of the season. They get 97.66 points. Overall: 160.08. P.S.: If anyone ever doubted Japan is the best host of figure skating competitions, the entire arena singing and wishing happy birthday to Kaitlyn must have cleared all doubts.
  • Madison Chock/Evan Bates gave their best as they had everything to gain from a solid and beautiful Dr Zhivago program. Their score: 98.37. Overall: 164.91.

Sometimes competitions are decided by mistakes and not by merits, but having them in any other way would be unfair. Congratulations to Madison Chock/Evan Bates for a performance worthy of the Gold medal, Happy Birthday and all the best to Kaitlyn Weaver, and congratulations to Ksenia and Kirill for getting their first International Bronze Medal.
