2014 European Championships - The Dancers, Part 2

Tonight a couple will make history by winning their first European Championships. Whether it will be Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte or Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov, is left to be seen. And will Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland manage to take home the Bronze medal after years in which Great Britain was barely present in ice dance competitions?

Isabella Tobias/Deividas Stagniunas re-enact Skyfall for us. They have beautiful lifts, but not-so-synchronized twizzles. Story-wise, except for one moment in which she plays the seductive part of a veritable Bond Girl, there isn't much there. He should mimick James Bond a bit more. They earn 85.55. Overall: 142.31.

Julia Zlobina/Alexei Sitnikov tell a story of sacrifice and passion for dance, accompanied by the soundtrack of Pina. Except for a tiny non-synchronization moment in the twizzles, the two do a pretty good job. This time they chose great costumes which emphasize their roles as dancers. Their score: 87.96. Overall: 147.48.

Taking on a classic is not easy, but as Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri show us, if you have such beautiful costumes and interesting lifts, you're bound to impress. There are moments in which Marco doesn't seem as heart-broken as Charlene, but overall the programme is very enjoyable. They earn 86.23 points. Overall: 144.40.

Pernelle Carron/Lloyd Jones have quite the misfortune with their classic programme. After having trouble with the twizzles, Lloyd falls halfway into the programme. It's a shame because they were really going places before that. That low rotational spin is spectacular. Their score: 78.94. Overall: 135.29.

Michael Jackson's music is overshadowed by the audience's cheers once Penny Coomes/Nicholas Buckland start skating. With some iconic moves, their programme is a true tribute to the King of Pop. Congratulations for doing so well under such pressure! They earn 96.93 points. Overall: 158.69.

Watching Anna Cappelini/Luca Lanotte skate is a bit like watching theatre on ice. They are comical, accurate and seem to enjoy themselves out there, which is what makes it look so easy. The only flaw I can find is Anna's dress which is disturbingly similar to cake icing. Their score: 102.03. Overall: 171.61.

Ekaterina Riazanova/Ilia Tkachenko could play a bit more with the tragic one-sided love story of Phantom of the Opera, but their routine looks sophisticated enough to fit into the theme. Unfortunately, Ekaterina messes up the twizzles. They earn 90.09 points. Overall: 150.44.

Victoria Sinitsina/Ruslan Zhiganshin are new to the European Championships, as is their theme, Norma, the story of the high priestess of the druids. It's a good start for Russia's future. Their score: 93.10. Overall: 153.73.

Elena Ilinykh/Nikita Katsalapov have just learned that losing focus for a second can cost you dearly. She falls towards the end of the programme, but otherwise they are artistic and acrobatic in their  performance. They earn 100.97 points. Overall: 170.51.

Congratulations to Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte for being the new European Champions. Let's hope this is the first such title out of many. As for Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov, that silly mistake doesn't take away from their great talent and I'm sure things will be better next time. Last, but definitely not least, Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland have beaten the odds and deserve a shout out for it!

  1. In their story Ruslan is a an executioner
taking Viki to a execution. But because he fell
in love with her, he takes her and they run
away. In the beginning of third part Ruslan
hides Viki in front of everybody. But at the
end.....Viki kills Ruslan, it was her plan from
the beginning – to enchant him, force him to
save her life and finally leave him.
    -> that's the story :)
