Skate Canada 2014 - Pairs' Short Programme

Surely if there's one event here that the Canadians have in their back pockets, it's the pairs'. But that doesn't mean Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford are the only ones worthy of the spotlight. Here's some thoughts on all of the performances.

Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro's new partnership is paying off. They have no mistake on a technical level. Artistically, I'm hard to please when it comes to Cell Block Tango, so my opinion is that she could be a bit sassier and the choreography could do with a bit more elements of the murder stories. Their score: 53.79.

It is still pretty obvious that Brittany Jones/Joshua Reagan haven't been a pair for long, but there is definitely some chemistry here to improve on. However, they couldn't be more out of sync both on the side-by-side triple Toeloops and on the side-by-side spins. The music is the soundtrack of W.E. They get 49.80 points.

Madeline Aaron/Max Settlage transform the ice rink into a stage with their Coppelia programme. I love the balletic theme they are so loyal to throughout the routine. Her blue tutu-ish costume is stitch perfect and his blue outfit has a royal air about it. Their score: 57.20.

Mari Vartmann/Aaron Van Cleave skate on a waltz from Petersburg's Secrets. It's a fine routine, but a bit dull. In addition, he falls on the side-by-side triple Toeloops. They get 48.43 points.

If names are anything to go by, Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov (for those who don't know what I'm talking about, look up Tatiana Tarasova and Nikolai Morozov) have a future of gold ahead. For now, they are intense and almost flawless on Sarabande Suite. Their score: 64.14.

Remember the days when Chinese pairs skated solely on classical music and looked all serious and gloomy? Well, they are gone and I say to them: 'Good Riddance.' Wenjing Sui/Cong Han's Stray Cat Strut is just the right amount of cheeky and quite fun to watch. They could still use a bit more dedication to the feeling of the music, but I really like their lifts, especially the one depicting a cat lying on her belly (that's what that was, right?). They get 65.22 points.

They are still great, but to me, Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres's routines are so similar there's no way to set one apart from the other. They always wear the same type of costumes, it's just the colours that differ, and the choreography is always elegant, but rarely much more. I still like them, but I wish they had something that could make them unique. Their score: 56.47

Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford's programme is so packed with great elements, it feels as if it only lasts for a few moments. They are extremely confident in jumping the triple Lutz, which is evidence of the hard work they've put into perfecting it. The music is Un peu plus haut (A Bit Too High) by Ginette Reno. They get 72.70 points.

Canada can't lose now after the perfect performance of Duhamel & Radford. As for the second place, Sui & Cong have sneaked into it with an entertaining '80s classic. Tarasova & Morozov are on third.
