GPF 2014 - The Ladies' Turn

It's the ladies' turn to show us their short routines, and they are bound to give everything they've got tonight because the competition has perhaps never before been fiercer. We've only got one group here made up of the best ladies of the moment. The logic as to why they're not divided into two groups like the pair and dance skaters eludes me, but who am I to question ISU decisions?

The first skater, Rika Hongo, wasn't supposed to come to Barcelona, but Gracie Gold's injury and consequential withdrawal propelled her upward. Despite that, there is no doubt she has the necessary skills to be at a Grand Prix Final. Her jumps are good if perhaps just a little flawed. Her score: 61.10.

Ashley Wagner came here with nothing to lose, but perhaps that's not the perfect circumstance for her; perhaps that's why she steps out of the triple Flip, a mistake that shows more lack of concentration than anything else. She gets 60.24 points.

On the opposite side of things, Julia Lipnitskaia usually makes mistakes when her eyes are set on high aims. Today is the exception, hopefully an exception that will become ordinary practice. She doesn't lose her composure for a single second and finishes with zero errors. Her score: 66.24.

Anna Pogorilaya's Adagio is the kind of routine you watch with your head in your hand, dreamy eyes and a dumb smile on your face - all signs of being under a spell. That's what I was doing before being brutally brought back to reality by her fall on the triple Toeloop. She gets 61.34 points.

There's a look of utter victory on Elizaveta Tuktamysheva's face at the end of her bolero. It might not lead to a win though, at least for now, as she over-rotates the triple Lutz. She's becoming an expert at skating with her hands above her head, which she does not only while jumping, but also during the step sequence. Her score: 67.52.

Elena Radionova falls on the triple Loop, but not because of nerves; she's almost too relaxed when landing it, which makes her lean backwards more than she ought to. That doesn't keep the smile off her face though, proof that this girl has great spirit! She gets 63.98 points.

Well, I called it; Elizaveta Tuktamysheva takes the lead, followed by Julia Lipnitskaia and Elena Radionova. Don't carve the results in stone though because between these three ladies, you really can't be sure what will happen in the final.
