Skate America 2016 - When Hard Work Pays Off (Men's Final)

The third final of this season's Skate America is about to start. Is it going to be a reversal of the outcome as seen in the pairs' final or are Shoma Uno, Adam Rippon and Jason Brown going to keep their current standings? Let's start by looking at those most likely to reach the podium.

Boyang Jin has been working over the summer to improve his presentation. Choosing the comedic, but melancholic Avenue helped a little, but he's still got a long way to go. Love his interactions with the judges though - talk about getting up close and personal. Technically, he steps out of the quad Salchow and falls on the quad Toeloop. There's also a double-footed Axel. His score: 172.15. Overall: 245.08.

The atmosphere stays jazzy thanks to Nam Nguyen's An American in Paris. He seems very comfortable with this musical style. The only mistake is an over-rotated jump in the triple combination. He gets 159.64 points. Overall: 239.26.

Exogenesis Symphony Part III is a softer music than we're used to from Sergei Voronov, but it's nice to see a calmer routine from him. The song is the same as Ashley Wagner's and the quality of the programme is truly not below hers. No mistakes and an awesome entrance into the Combination spin, but it's very likely still not going to be enough for the gold. Still, maybe a medal? His score: 166.60. Overall: 245.28.

Adam Rippon's free programme is materfully put together. He combined music from Coldplay and The Cinematic Orchestra, two of my favourite bands, so I couldn't love it more. The choreography is fantastic with bird-like movements and his arms giving the impression of wings. The only mistake, really, is the fall on the quad Toeloop. He gets 174.11 points. Overall: 261.43.

Despite the American's crowd-pleasing performance, Shoma Uno doesn't seem to feel any pressure. Or, more likely, he can already handle it like a champion. The two Astor Piazzolla tangos he skates to make for a difficult musical choice, full of twists and variety. Luckily the only fall happens so late in the programme, nobody really cares about it anymore. His score: 190.19. Overall: 279.34.

Jason Brown is finally jumping quads, and exactly as I expected, this means he is going for some of the leading men in the sport. He makes no errors, and the routine, set to The Scent of Love, is very fluid - each element flows into the other almost naturally - making this a lyrical performance. He gets 182.63 points. Overall: 268.38.

Well, how about that? Jason Brown snatches the silver from Adam Rippon, who finishes on third. The leader however remains unchanged - Shoma Uno takes the gold medal here. Congratulations to all of them.
