Internationaux de France 2017 - The Starting Point (Pairs FS)
If the ice dance finale was unmissable to the host country of Internationaux de France, the pairs finale is going to be the second most anticipated event. France's national champions are competing for the silver medal, and they're in the perfect position to get it after the short.
Lola Esbrat/Andrei Novoselov are the first pair to skate. They struggle as she doubles out of the 3Salchow, he can't get her into the lasso position for the first lift and they can't perform the side-by-side spins completely in sync. Presentation wise, I'd like to see The Great Gatsby come through more in the choreography. Their score: 94.82. Overall: 146.72.
Zoe Jones/Christopher Boyadji's first Grand Prix free skate is peppered with mistakes, a lot of which are probably due to her not feeling well. She falls on the side-by-side 3Toeloops and the throw 3Flip, doubles out of the 3Salchow and double-foots the throw 3Loop. The side-by-side spins are not in sync either. They earn 85.84 points. Overall: 130.43.
Marissa Castelli/Mervin Tran keep stepping out of the side-by-side jumps - first on the 3Toeloop, then on the 3Salchow. The side-by-side spins are also not in sync at all. On the plus side, they have some interesting lift variations and a phenomenal entrance into the death spiral during which she goes into the position before he grabs her hand. Their score: 118.16. Overall: 177.15.
Cheng Peng/Yang Jin are also having difficulties today. She falls on the side-by-side 3Salchows and stumbles right before the throw 3Salchow, but the jump is safely landed. The side-by-side spins are not in sync, mainly because he loses speed during the second position. I like how they elongate the last lift by going into a dance lift. They earn 125.74 points. Overall: 188.14.
Nicole della Monica/Matteo Guarise start the routine with a lot of pressure on their backs given that they could win their first Grand Prix medal here. They could do with a bit more detailed entrances and exits out of elements like the combo spin, but their skill value is undoubtedly high. That being said, he double-foots the side-by-side 3Toeloop, while they both lose synchronicity during the side-by-side spins. Their score: 126.94. Overall: 197.59.
Liubov Iliushechkina/Dylan Moscovitch are definitely fighting for that bronze medal. They have one too many mistakes though - Liubov double-foots the side-by-side combination and doubles out of the side-by-side 3Salchows; the side-by-side spins are not in sync for them either. Their lifts are something to behold though - gravity-defying positions and abrupt changes of direction. They earn 126.71 points. Overall: 193.07.
Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres bring another modern theme on ice for the free skate. They know there's power in a contemporary song that everyone knows, understands and loves. Great to see them communicate with the audience during their transitions. The only mistake is the double-footed landing of the throw 4Salchow. Their score: 141.14. Overall: 214.32.
Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov fold under the pressure put on them by the French's extraordinary performance. Evgenia double-foots the side-by-side 3Salchows and completely misses the first two jumps of the side-by-side jump combination. After that, the mood of this otherwise fun routine goes rapidly down. They earn 140.36 points. Overall: 218.20.
A lot of good things came out of this final. France kept their silver medal position after a fabulous free skate that would have probably got them the gold had the short programme gone a bit differently yesterday. There's also great news for Italy, with della Monica/Guarise winning their first ever Grand Prix medal. Let's hope it's the start of something special for these two.
