Rostelecom Cup 2016 - Top 5 Ice-Dance Short Programmes

The ice dancers got the party started in Moscow, quite literally, with tunes from the likes of Elvis Presley and Grease that got people moving their feet. Let's see what the top five couples of the competition brought to the game.

Tiffany Zahorski/Jonathan Guerreiro ended up in 5th place with music by Christina Aguilera and Parov Stelar. I have to say I'm not a big fan of this musical combo. The first part was super sexy, but the second was silly and completely destroyed the vibe they had going at the beginning. They also still need to work on their chemistry, but this is their debut at the Grand Prix Series, so there's time for that. Their score: 64.28.
Madison and Evan's dance
was the grittiest of the day

Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri's concept was at an entirely different level. They chose to skate to the soundtrack of Grease, and everything about the concept, from the costumes to the rock 'n roll touches of the choreography, was perfect. Absolutely loved their twizzles, but the lift looked a bit wobbly. They got 67.72 points.

Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje gave a lot of thought to their short programme this season. They finally decided on a combination of blues and hip hop, which is a challenging mix, but they pulled it off very well. The first position of the twizzles was quite difficult and their mid-line step sequence, set to a hip-hop remix of Michael Jackson's Dangerous  and Jam, was as cool as they get. Also, Kaitlyn slayed it with her black and silver outfit. Their score: 69.81.

Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev were another couple to use Christina Aguilera for the Blues part of their routine. Their dance was more sophisticated as that is the style that suits them best. Their lift also had multiple positions, but it made me realise most lifts this season look alike and, more importantly, look a lot like what Gabriella and Guillaume have been doing. They got 74.92.

I can see why Madison Chock/Evan Bates are in first place. Their programme is also made of two parts, like all of the rest, but the songs - Bad to the Bone and Uptown Funk - actually match, making the concept seem like a single unit rather than split into part A and part B. Their curve lift might just be my favourite of the season. Their score: 75.04.

So here is where the ice dance competition is at the moment. The Americans look like a sure bet for the gold to me, but you don't say it's over in figure skating until it is actually over, so don't miss the final.
