Trophee de France 2016 - The Future Looks Good (Ladies Short)

The ladies' short programme is going to keep us at the edge of our seats from the very start as the best skaters in Paris are all competing in the first group. Is this the ISU's new way to attract more viewers from the very start of the competition? Let me know what you think, but first, let's see what the girls bring on the ice tonight.

This season is not going well for Gracie Gold. She double-foots the triple Toeloop, doubles out of the triple Flip and singles the Axel. This is nothing short of a disaster for a skater who came close to wining the Worlds last season. Her score: 54.87.

Evgenia Medvedeva offers a staggering contrast to the American. Her ability to tell a story gives me goosebumps, from her expressions to the way the programme, set to River Flows in You, is put together. Her stamina is also incredible, doing all the jumps after the step sequence. She gets 78.52 points (0.14 points away from the World record).

Gabrielle Daleman delivers the second perfect performance of the night. She skates to Herodiade, which is a music I've never heard before, but about which I'm now very curious. That's what good performances do to you, they make you love not only them, but also the story and music behind. Her score: 72.70.

Don't think it's too early to say Mao Asada's costume is my favourite of the season, at least for the short. Her jumps are not technically impressive as she's playing it safe due to health reasons, but the presentation of El Amor Brujo is phenomenal. She seems quite evil in her role, always watching the public as if ready to attack at any moment. She gets 61.29 points.

How creative is that? Alena Leonova gets ahead of trends and plays Harley Quinn on ice, but to music by Bjork. She double-foots the triple Flip. Always a joy to watch her. Her score: 63.87 (Wow, she is head of Mao).

I keep hearing that So Youn Park hasn't fulfilled her potential of carrying Yuna Kim's legacy, and I think that's unfair to So Youn. Putting so much pressure on a new skater is almost never good. I'm not saying this is what happened here, but I'd rather people appreciate her style rather than always compare her to Yuna. She gets 64.89 points.

It's not a good start for the second group as Mae Berenice Meite falls on the triple Lutz after putting a hand down (and almost falling) on the triple Toeloop. The music (Goodness and Freedom) is so strong it just comes at you from everywhere, if that makes sense. Need to watch it again to form an opinion about the programme itself. Her score: 52.78.

Laurine Lecavelier might have had her best short yet. Really cool entrance into the triple Lutz, leaning back right before take off. Also, love the fact her costume is a little weird - it makes her stand out. The song, Experience, is very inspirational. She gets 66.61 points.

I've heard great things about Maria Sotskova, and she doesn't disappoint. All jumps are clean and she shows she is definitely capable of intense programmes as she skates to Butterflies Are Free. Beautiful dress. Her score: 68.71.

I didn't expect much from Anastasia Galustyan before she started skating, but that was a mistake. From the first second of the routine, you can tell she is incredibly expressive and graceful. Such a shame she fell on the double Axel and hurt herself in the process. She gets 56.92 points.

Oh no, Yuka Nagai becomes the second skater of the night to single out of the double Axel. She also over-rotates the triple Lutz. The music is Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra by Nigel Hess. Her score: 52.41.

Wakaba Higuchi ends the short event in great style. She skates to La Califa by Ennio Morricone, and she is breathtaking. Love the free hand movement during the hair-cutter spin. Technically, she jumps with unbelievable ease, but she does double out of the triple Flip. She gets 65.02 points.

Well, I haven't seen a third place changing so many times after the favourites all skated in a long time. The top three at the moment are Evgenia Medvedeva, Gabrielle Daleman and newcomer Maria Sotskova.
