Season 2013/2014: New Programmes, Part 4

When Tatiana Volosozhar joined Maxim Trankov, Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy decided they were no longer going to train together with her. That decision previewed just how good Volosozhar and Trankov were going to be and shows that Savchenko always knew the day would come when both couples would become favourites for the Olympic gold.

Tatiana Volosozhar & Maxim Trankov - by defeating the Germans both in the World and European Championships last year, they take the lead, at least for now. They've been showing us amazing concepts ever since their debut in 2010/2011, and this year won't be different. Their short programme music is called Waltz Masquerade by Aram Khachaturian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCoLUMURunQ). Having already seen it in action at Nebelhorn Trophy, I can say it is absolutely fabulous. Doesn't Trankov look dashing in that uniform? The long programme is even more intricate: Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy - if you're talking experience and years of effort put into getting here, then ethically the Olympic title should go to this German couple. Unfortunately for them, winning in figure skating doesn't have anything to do with ethics. Fortunately, they have made two music choices this year that will blow your mind: When Winter Comes by Andre Rieu for the short and The Nutcracker by P.I. Tchaikovsky for the long.

So who will win? Betting on either of them would be risky at this point in time, so until all that gets sorted out, let's take a look at other pairs and their new programmes.

Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford - except for the two top couples we've already discussed, this is the couple that gets us most excited about. It's not because of their World bronze medal from last year, nor because of how good they are, but because of a premiere in figure skating: their short program music is an original composition by Eric Radford. Yes, you heard me right, our boy composes too and we're counting the seconds until we get to hear that song.

Pang Qing & Tong Jian - although there's a tendency of spelling their names wrong and you're never quite sure what their order is, this Chinese couple isn't likely to be forgotten soon. They're probably the most elegant pair out there, which can always be seen in their choices of programmes. This time, they've chosen Nocturne from Lady Caliph by Ennio Morricone for the short program (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbBbJTlcvUE), which is breathtakingly beautiful, and I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables for the long program, which has the potential of bringing tears into our eyes when performed by these two.
