Skate Canada 2013 Highlights (Free Skates)
PAIRS
With another failed lift and a couple of dodgy jumps, Margaret Purdy & Michael Marinaro's Casablanca routine failed to impress. Their score: 91.89. Overall: 131.39
Paige Lawrence & Rudi Swiegers had a couple of mistakes (she fell on the Triple Toeloop; they both singled the Double Axel combination), but nothing too disastrous. In terms of presentation, they could have sold that epic music a bit better. They got 106.88 points. Overall: 159.82
Mari Vartmann & Aaron Van Cleave's jumps were a nightmare today (both the side-by-side and the thrown), which is probably why the interpretation was next to nonexistent. The side-by-side spins were also out of sync and quite slow. Their score: 94.51. Overall: 149.59
Wenjing Sui & Han Cong premiered a Quad Twist today. Although Kalinka seems an unusual choice for a Chinese couple, they presented it very well. The costumes were adorable. The only mistake was her fall at the end of the Axel. They got 124.75 points. Overall: 193.77
Stefania Berton & Ondrej Hotarek's rendition of Dracula was not as dark as you might expect, but it was well-skated and beautifully presented. Only one minor mistake - Stefania's Triple Salchow landing. Their score: 124.54. Overall: 193.92
Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford learnt that one small mistake can cost you dearly. That being said, their routine was absolutely fabulous and is bound to get them a gold medal at some point this season. They got 121.05 points. Overall: 190.62
LADIES
From the ecstatic beginning to the tragic end, Evita's story was very well portrayed by Courtney Hicks. The only technical mistake was the failed Double Loop from the combination. Her score: 111.30. Overall: 162.00
With a double-footed Triple Lutz and both Triple Loops failed, Veronik Mallet's routine was anything but funny. She did her best to overcome them, but the mistakes messed up the presentation. She obtained 87.42 points. Overall: 138.13
Natalia Popova is yet another skater to keep last season's programme. She looked graceful, but singled the Triple Salchow. Her score: 93.52. Overall: 145.88
Amelie Lacoste's presentation was simply beautiful! Unfortunately, she failed both Triple Flips and the Double Axel. Still, this is one of the most sophisticated free skates we've seen so far. She obtained 103.98 points. Overall: 163.11
Christina Gao's interpretation of Angels and Demons was hauntingly beautiful. If it hadn't been for the singled Triple Toeloop, this would have been a flawless performance. Her score: 110.87. Overall: 173.69
What a grand theme has Akiko Suzuki chosen to mark her final competitive season! She had a dodgy landing on the Triple Flip, but her presentation was pure magic. Another masterpiece from Ms Suzuki! She obtained 127.99 points. Overall: 193.75
Absolutely fabulous at only 15, Julia Lipnitskaia receives a standing ovation for impeccable presentation and flawless technique. Her score: 131.34. Overall: 198.23
Gracie Gold might have been Sleeping Beauty today, but her performance definitely kept us awake. Her costume resembling spider webs was perfect, but her skating was not - a failed Triple Lutz and a dodgy Triple Salchow. She obtained 117.20. Overall: 186.65
Kaetlyn Osmond had to withdraw due to an unfortunate hamstring injury. We wish her a quick recovery!
DANCE
As tired as I am of the Romeo & Juliet theme, I have to admit Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri did catch my attention with a couple of intriguing elements - that first lift in particular, was quite spectacular. Their score: 82.25. Overall: 134.28
Alexandra Paul & Mitchell Islam delivered a beautiful performance, showcasing what the future of Canadian Ice Dance looks like...and it looks good! They got 90.03 points. Overall: 143.77
Alexandra Stepanova & Ivan Bunik weren't off to a good start with a fall on the first lift, which affected the rest of the programme. However, the routine itself was dramatic and benefited from a great choreography. Unlike the short dance, up 'till the fall, Alexandra was quite convincing in her role as a witch. Their score: 77.49. Overall: 133.12
Nelli Zhiganshina & Alexander Gazsi not only forgot their free dance costumes at home, but also messed up the twizzles. Other than that, the routine was as entertaining as we expected. They got 82.25 points. Overall: 138.16
Ekaterina Riazanova & Ilia Tkachenko should have worked a bit more on their Phantom of the Opera costumes. The programme itself didn't have that 'something special' that could help it distinguish from previous Phantom routines. Their twizzles were also the tinniest bit messy. Their score: 85.77. Overall: 145.56
Madison Hubbell & Zachary Donohue were simply astonishing - the costumes, the presentation, the technical difficulty...everything was perfect. They got 92.28 points. Overall: 153.20
Another phenomenal concept from Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje. They skated superbly, and it's worth mentioning that Andrew's high-waist pants are the first of the sort to actually look good. Their score: 104.88. Overall: 175.23
Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir have defied belief once more. Last time, Tessa jumped out of a lift, this time it was Scott's turn to shift position during the first lift. This is why they're top of the top. They got 107.88 points. Overall: 181.03
MEN
After a shaky short programme that brought him a seventh place, Michal Brezina came back with a Sherlock Holmes routine the audience loved. The second half of the programme was unfortunately filled with stupid mistakes, the biggest one being the fall on the Triple Lutz. No wonder he was so angry with himself. His score: 146.61. Overall: 218.32
Yuzuru Hanyu failed the Quad Salchow, but landed the Quad Toeloop today. The presentation was every bit as dramatic as anticipated. It probably helped that he has the right age to be Romeo. He got 154.40 points. Overall: 234.80
The absence of a quad jump hurt Nobunari Oda's overall score, but otherwise didn't take from the presentation of the routine. Except for the fall on the Triple Flip, the Japanese skater had a smooth and clean skate. His score: 152.18. Overall: 233.00
Patrick Chan is heading straight to an Olympic gold medal. His new Vivaldi routine is the best he's ever had so it's safe to say he is very likely to become Olympic champion this season. But until then, he had some problems with his Axels today. He got 173.93 points. Overall: 262.03
