Cup of China 2013 Highlights (Free Skates)

MEN

Peter Liebers delivered an almost flawless programme. He had only two tiny mistakes on the second Triple Axel and on the Triple Flip. His interpretation was patched, showing only when he didn't have jumps to do. His score: 131.46. Overall: 200.80

Nan Song has a bright future ahead of him. Technically his routine was almost perfect, although he lacked a quad jump. The silly mistake was tripping during one of the transitions. As for his presentation, he expressed the pain in Enio Moriccone's The Mission very well. He obtained 128.12 points. Overall: 196.80

Maxim Kovtun's rendition of Tchaikovski's Piano Concerto no. 1 had something majestic about it. He only jumped two quads, not three as he had planned, which is still impressive. His score: 156.81. Overall: 238.65

Han Yan couldn't control the pressure all the way through. He had a dodgy landing on the Triple Axel and tripped out of the Triple Flip, ending up falling. These mistakes affected the presentation just the tinniest bit, but overall it was enjoyable to watch. He obtained155.48 points. Overall: 245.62

Richard Dornbush is yet another skater to pay tribute to The Beatles. Despite a shaky start (he fell on the Quad Toeloop and doubled the Triple Salchow), the programme was a success. Presentation  is still what he's best at and you could tell this is one band he's listened to a lot. His score: 145.99. Overall: 218.57

Florent Amodio was as charming and cheerful as ever, even after the double-footed quad and the Single instead of a Triple Salchow. As entertaining as the routine was though, he is far from the level that made him European champion. So far, changing coaches doesn't look like it was a good decision. He obtained 136.64. Overall: 213.39

Denis Ten might not have looked like a hooligan, but he played the part of one well. To everyone's dismay, he doubled the Quad Toeloop, singled the Triple Lutz and lost control over the landing of the second Triple Axel. His score: 147.75. Overall: 224.80

PAIRS

Felicia Zhang & Nate Bartholomay wore costumes in the colours of the French flag to better portray Les Miserables - it was perfect. The less perfect bits were the lack of synchronization on the side-by-side Triple Toeloops and the fall on the thrown Triple Flip. Their score: 105.19. Overall: 155.52

Daria Popova & Bruno Massot should have taken more advantage of their dramatic music. The lack of interpretation could have been caused by the mistakes - she fell on the side-by-side Triple Toeloop and put the hand down on the thrown Triple Salchow, while he couldn't do the last lift. They obtained 89.51 points. Overall: 141.33

Anastasia Martiusheva & Alexei Rogonov's failed lift made our hearts skip a beat. Fortunately the fall wasn't serious, and they could move on. The story they told was about the death of nature when Autumn comes, which is why Edith Piaf's Milord didn't seem to fit with the rest of the routine. The costumes also looked more like Christmas-ish than Autumnal, but at least they were gorgeous. Their score: 94.17. Overall: 147.19

Xuehan Wang & Lei Wang were simply lovely in their Singing in the Rain routine. There was only one small mistake on the thrown Triple Salchow. Who said Chinese skaters can't interpret western music?! They obtained 115.19. Overall: 172.35

Alexa Scimeca & Chris Knierim looked charming as Disney characters. There were various problems with the Double Axel sequence, the last half of the Death Spiral and especially the thrown Triple Loop. Their score: 103.73. Overall: 161.72

Cheng Pen & Hao Zhang's costumes are to die for! Their routine was even more magnificent and so exquisitely skated, it brought tears into your eyes. There is no doubt this couple is heading for glory. They obtained 122.95. Overall: 187.19

Aliona Savcheko & Robin Szolkowy were once more very close to landing the thrown Triple Axel, but failed. It didn't matter much though because the rest of the routine was every bit as good as you expected. But if they don't ace that jump soon, they'll have to rethink their Sochi strategy. Their score: 132.14. Overall: 201.21

Qing Pang & Jian Tong's costumes were not as obviously French as those of Scimeca/Knierim, but the performance was undoubtedly superior. They can express tragedy like no other pair. Technically though, the programme was peppered with mistakes. They obtained 124.00 points. Overall: 194.38

LADIES

Xioawen Guo's two mistakes were barely noticeable, but unfortunately, so was her presentation. She expressed nothing of the passion and sadness of Don Juan de Marco. Her score: 94.18. Overall: 139.50

Kexin Zhang, just like her compatriot, worse even, missed the feeling of the music entirely. It's a pity because technically she's very strong and had no mistake here. She obtained 91.56 points. Overall: 144.88

Zijun Li didn't seem very confident today. The interpretation was missing, she didn't do all her jumps, she did all her spins on one leg and she fell on the Triple Flip. This is not the girl we're used to! Her score: 85.40. Overall: 139.98

Agnes Zawadzki did her best to express La Cumparasita and Tango Jalousie well, but fell short of our expectations. The high number of mistakes might have been to blame - she doubled the Triple Toeloop, put her hand down on the Triple Lutz, double-footed the Double Loop, fell on the second Triple Lutz and singled the Double Axel. She obtained 93.91 points. Overall: 147.64

Nikol Gosviani was the first skater of the day to 'sell' her routine properly. She was poised and graceful, but had a few mistakes. She fell on the Triple Toeloop, doubled the Triple Loop and the second Triple Toeloop, and double-footed the Triple Flip. Her score: 98.28. Overall: 152.04

Haruka Imai's dress was as elegant as her programme. She fell on the Triple Salchow and landed messily on the Triple Toeloop and Double Axel. She obtained 95.51 points. Overall: 150.30

Kanako Murakami's rendition of Papa Can You Hear Me was divine. She singled the Triple Flip and the Double Axel, and double-footed the Triple Salchow. She seems nice as a person too. Her score: 108.62. Overall: 165.95

Anna Pogorilaya played a mermaid today, Pirates of the Caribbean style, and she was very convincing. Both the Double Axels gave her a bit of trouble today, but nothing too bad. She obtained 118.38 points. Overall: 178.62

Carolina Kostner won 'best costume of the night' for sure. Unfortunately, the fall on the Triple Toeloop, plus jumping doubles instead of Triple Lutz and Triple Loop, made it impossible for her to win the competition. The interpretation though was brilliant and very pleasing to the eyes. Her score: 110.65. Overall: 173.40

Adelina Sotnikova's see-through costume was a bit weird, but the presentation was 'spot on'. The element that gave her a hard time today was the Triple Flip, both of which she failed. She obtained 108.64 points. Overall: 174.70

DANCE

Xiaoyang Yu & Chen Wang's routine was slow and lacked a powerful interpretation. They had, however, gorgeous costumes and synchronized twizzles. Their score: 64.94. Overall: 106.18

Yiyi Zhang & Nan Wu's tango was not so bad, except for his tripping on the first half of the twizzles. They obtained 63.19 points. Overall: 104.98

Pernelle Carron & Lloyd Jones have never been better than this! The costumes were fabulous, the interpretation, very dramatic, and those twizzles were to die for. Their score: 83.92. Overall: 134.12

Alexandra Aldridge & Daniel Eaton were Bollywood actors today and as far as presentation goes, they could have won a Bollywood Movie Award. The costumes were perfect, the choreography was very difficult and their twizzles were unbelievably fast and sharp. They obtained 79.14 points. Overall: 132.08

Madison Chock & Evan Bates have made it official: Les Miserables is the 2013 music trend in figure skating. Their free dance was fabulous, the costumes, 'spot on', and the fact that they chose only one song from the soundtrack helped the linear storytelling. Their score: 93.76. Overall: 150.53

Nathalie Pechalat & Fabian Bourzat are the masters of creativity in ice-dance. With their colourful costumes and bright attitude, they made the world seem better even if just for four minutes. Excellent job! They obtained 102.08 points. Overall: 165.68

Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev stormed into the free dance with dizzying speed. Their story was tragic and you need only to look at the costumes to figure that out, but it was hauntingly beautiful. Their score: 97.72. Overall: 163.42
