Trophee Eric Bompard 2013 (Short Programmes)
MEN
Nan Song's Guitar Concerto on ice didn't go as planned here. He had a hand down on the Triple Axel and a faulty landing on the Triple Lutz. The costume he wore, although fit for the music, looked a bit too much like a pair of pajamas. His score: 71.36
Jason Brown proved why skating on music you like is a great advantage. His confident and passionate interpretation of Prince's song left no question about his abilities. Neither did his perfect jumps and incredibly difficult spins, most of which showcased his amazing flexibility. He obtained 84.77 points.
Alexander Majorov went back to roots with Korobushko, but was not his usual charismatic self here. He doubled the Quad Toeloop, landed the Triple Toeloop messily and fell on the Triple Axel. He was too slow throughout the first half of the routine to be able to do any of those jumps properly. His score: 59.72
Han Yan needs to work on his facial expressions. The choreography was obviously comedic, but his interpretation of it was nowhere near that. Technically, he had only one minor mistake when he stepped out of the Triple Toeloop. He obtained 84.34 points.
Florent Amodio's attitude, costume and step sequence were all brilliant. La Cumparasita is a great choice for him. Unfortunately, he double-footed the Quad Salchow and doubled the Triple Lutz. His score: 73.65.
Michal Brezina already has a history of recycling routines, but they're always so well choreographed, we don't really mind. In the Hall of the Mountain King got its second outing this season, and things looked like they were going alright until he fell on the Triple Axel. Artistically, he's got the same intoxicating energy as ever, making you step inside the story with his interpretation. He obtained 71.91 points.
Patrick Chan had control and grace on the ice, and looked ready to win the ultimate gold medal, the Olympic. His score: 98.52.
Yuzuru Hanyu was the favourite of the crowd, who gave him what seemed like an endless amount of toys. As fit for classic music as for electric guitars, he had flawless elements and some spectacular transitions. He obtained 95.37 points.
PAIRS
Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres could have used a bit more swagger in their Minnie the Moocher routine. She fell on the thrown Triple Flip and tripped after the death spiral, but the real bummer was how little they did to turn the performance into a show, when the music was clearly demanding it. Their score: 56.78
Qing Pang/Jian Tong's story of power and love was formidably told, but he lost control during the Triple Toeloop and fell. They obtained 67.69 points.
Vera Bazarova/Yuri Larionov put classic music on hold for this short routine, skating instead on Tintine and Paris by Night. Although it's good to try new things, and I'm always in favour of skaters changing their style, they were too serious, almost sombre, when the music was fun and alert. The costumes were slightly off point as well and could have used a bit more colour. There was also a fall on the Triple Toeloop, Vera's mistake. Their score: 65.67
Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford have a unique and exquisite concept for their short, one they can be proud of as it is entirely theirs. She fell on the side-by-side Triple Lutz, but landed the thrown one splendidly. They obtained 66.07 points.
LADIES
Samantha Cesario is an American new-face, who, although didn't have a very difficult routine, skated clean and presented Fever nicely. She still needs to work on her jumping technique and speed. Her score: 56.55
Anna Pogorilaya lost focus for a second, which ruined the presentation in the second half of the programme. The big mistake was the Double Axel, which she missed entirely. Her spins are very original and fast. The long gloves gave her costume a bit of an edge. She obtained 60.03 points.
Natalia Popova always bring elegance on ice, but her elements are not as hard as those of her rivals. Her only mistake was the over-rotated Triple Flip, but she could use her flexibility a bit more in her spins. Her score: 50.87
Amelie Lacoste continues her streak of good performances. The interpretation was not as grand as The Feeling Begins, but she had some lovely arm movements which strengthened the story she was telling. The mistake was a Double instead of a Triple Loop. She obtained 55.92 points.
Mae Berenice Meite's costumes never seem to have any attitude, which is a shame because you could do something spectacular with music by Prince. Her skating was confident and flawless though. In terms of presentation, although it could have been better, she finally chose a song she can relate to. Her score: 56.50
Christina Gao sure touched some hearts today. She didn't have a single mistake and delivered an expressive, simply beautiful routine. She obtained 58.81 points.
Viktoria Helgesson has yet to skate her short routine cleanly. She had a hand down on the Triple Loop and double-footed the Double Axel. The waltz was elegant and sophisticated, with a costume that couldn't have been more perfect. Her score: 53.25
Adelina Sotnikova had something to be mad about at the end of the short programme. She double-footed the Triple Loop and messed up the Double Axel. She played Carmen well, with lots of charisma and cheekiness. The last position of the final spin was amazing. She obtained 60.01 points.
Ashley Wagner shined like a diamond today! Her performance was so powerful, it was as if the music followed her, not vice-versa. She attacked every single element, and came out a winner. Her score: 66.75
DANCE
Ksenia Monko/Kirill Khaliavin are not having a hard time getting popular with ice-dance fans. They were cheerful on the quickstep and lovely on the foxtrot. Their score: 56.53
Nicole Orford/Thomas Williams are the unpolished rock in team Canada's stack of jewelry. They were energetic and dressed for the occasion, making you feel you were looking at a ballroom, not an ice rink. The twizzles were good, but they were followed by the tinniest stumble. They obtained 47.45 points.
Gabriella Papadaki/Guillaume Cizeron may be newbies, but with the team that turned Delobel/Schoenfelder into World Champions behind them, they're heading to great places. Their finnstep was modern, but brilliantly skated. He, in particular, caught our eyes for all the right reasons. The costumes were gorgeous as well. Can't wait to see more of these two! Their score: 58.10
Penny Coomes/Nicholas Buckland's first outing was slightly disappointing. They were alert and the twizzles were fine, but the beat of the music ruined the magic. Great costumes! They obtained 52.52 points.
Nelli Zhiganshina/Alexander Gaszi have another unique concept on their hands. This time, they told the love story between a dork and a lady. As enjoyable as always, they were in perfect sync during the twizzles, which is progress for them. Their score: 60.13
Elena Ilinykh/Nikita Katsalapov are back to their fabulous selves! It was literally breathtaking, with something happening every single second at mind-blowing speed. They obtained 69.07 points.
Nathalie Pechalat/Fabian Bourzat are the masters of original stories. He was a 'distinguished' gentleman, she was the temptation luring him in. It was dark and seductive, with extraordinary elements. Their score: 70.59
Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir's chances of getting a second Olympic Gold seem dim right now, but not because they're any less formidable then four years ago, on the contrary. The transitions were smooth and the chemistry between them is second to none. They obtained 75.31 points.
