Grand Prix Final 2016 - About Taking Risks (Pairs SP)
Do you remember that awkward season when Ilinykh/Zhiganshin and Sinitsina/Katsalapov had just switched partners? Well, we're experiencing that in the pairs' event this season. The swap between Peng/Zhang and Yu/Jin seemed to have been a good decision at the Cup of China, at least for the Yu/Zhang pair, but how will their fare against rivals from Canada and Russia?
Let's start with their former partners, Cheng Peng/Yang Jin, who are not doing badly at all. I really like their short routine - it's funny, the costumes are great, the choreography is interesting, the technical is pretty good as well... The only problem is that they don't really look at each other unless they must. I imagine it's not easy being told one day you've a new partner, so it's natural that chemistry will take some time to develop. Their score: 70.84.
Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov look like they're at a party every time they skate their short. The music is Glam Electro Swing Remix. Their chemistry is miles better than that of the Chinese, which makes them look more comfortable on ice. The only error is the lack of sync in the side-by-side spins - great transition between the first and second position though. They get 78.60 points.
Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford's plans to have a killer programme go south when she falls on the throw triple Axel. Their spirits seems a bit down afterwards. Their score: 71.44.
Natalia Zabijako/Alexander Enbert's routine was good enough to beat a flawed Savchenko/Massot in Paris, but that performance looks far away tonight. Things are off from the triple twist, but the biggest mistake is her double-footing the landing of the throw jump. They get 65.79 points.
Julianne Seguin/Charlie Bilodeau experience a couple of nasty falls - he on the side-by-side jumps, she on the throw jump. It's a great shame because their Mode Inverse programme is delightful, full of quirky little choreographic details that are characteristic of Cirque du Soleil routines. Their score: 60.86.
Xiaoyu Yu/Hao Zhang's style is very different from their co-nationals', but their chemistry is quite similar. Skating to Eternal Flame and Fearless, this programme is dramatic, and gradually grows in intensity. The only error is in the side-by-side spins for them as well. They get 75.34 points.
Well, how about that? The winners of the Cup of China not only stood their ground in Marseille, but finished the short ahead of World champions Duhamel/Radford of Canada, who are on third. The top position is still a bit away though, currently held by Russia's Tarasova/Morozov. Will these two manage to finish the final as champions?
