Grand Prix Final 2016 - Unlikely Odds (Ladies SP)

How many times have we said Russia is going to take the first three spots in a competition in the last few years? There is no denying where the most talent is coming from at the moment, especially since the four Russian ladies in Marseilles are not even the ones we were betting on at the beginning of the season. That doesn't mean we should ignore the Japanese and Canadian competing here. They are both powerhouses when at their best.

I'd like to start by appreciating how gorgeous Satoko Miyahara looks in her crystal blue costume for Musetta's Waltz Song. Her jumps may not be high, but they are very fast. There are some exquisite exits out of those jumps too. Her score: 74.64.

Kaetlyn Osmond is pure sophistication on Sous le ciel du Paris and Milord. Her body language is that of a girl in a French fashion ad from the 1960s, which shows character study. She's fast in and out of jumps as well with no errors. She gets 75.54 points.

Maria Sotskova is the Russian we didn't see coming a few months ago. She skates to Butterflies Are Free, and uses her arms to mimic the wings of a butterfly. Great use of the erratic sounds of the violins. Her score: 65.74.

Anna Pogorilaya's costumes are hit or miss for me, and this one is a definite miss. Her presentation however is better than I've ever seen it. She seems uninhibited, especially in the step sequence, cleverly set against the modern section of the song, which is the most intense part. She over-rotates the triple Loop though. She gets 73.29 points.

I'm not a big fan of Elena Radionova's costume either. It just looks too sombre and heavy for her. The whole routine, in fact, looks a bit too serious. My favourite part is the step sequence, where she gets to be playful and charismatic, which is how she looks best. Her score: 68.98.

Evgenia Medvedeva aces her routine in Marseilles. The choreography is possibly one of my favourites ever, truly telling a story through mimicking different actions. I'm still not sure what goes wrong in it, but I've made it a challenge for myself to find out. She gets 79.21 points,

As I said in the beginning, you should never underestimate the non-Russian ladies competing here. So far, they are on third and second place, with Russia's Medvedeva leading.
