Skate America 2015 - Steel-strong Fragility (Ladies' SP)
Figure skating is an interesting sport. Some of the girls seem fragile, but are in fact steel-strong, while the ones that look tough as iron, can be cotton-candy soft. Whatever category they fit in, I wish all the girls competing at Skate America today the best of luck.
Miyu Nakashio is as good as advertised. Love the happy, silly music; it seems to fit her personality very well. The Halloween-ish costume is also very appropriate, and her elements are without mistake today. It's always nice to see a skater who doesn't try too much, but simply enjoys herself on the ice. Her score: 57.01.
Karen Chen's Nessun Dorma is the exact opposite of the Japanese's, but it is equally fabulous. The drama and grandeur are there despite the skater's young age, as is the elegance of a full-grown woman. She gets 62.28 points.
Elizabet Tursynbaeva may seem fragile, but she proves she is just as tough as other skaters with much more experience. Beautiful skate to Send In the Clowns. Her score: 59.26.
Pina's rhythm is so alert, you get tired just by watching Alaine Chatrand dancing to it. Glorious choreography though, and she doesn't lose stamina for a single second. Unfortunately, she also double-foots the triple Toeloop. She gets 59.40 points.
Well, I've definitely heard of Evgenia Medvedeva now! The Russian debutante flies to the moon with a touching performance and incredible technical ability. Also, random fact, doesn't she look a bit like Adelina Sotnikova? Her score: 70.92.
I've got quite a few things to say about Julia Lipnitskaia's Elvis Presley medley. First of all, I don't like that dress. I know a lot of you do, but I just think it's too colourful and not entirely fitting for the music. It makes me think of a painting, not of Elvis. Secondly, I am very happy to finally see her do something age-appropriate and fun. However, she doesn't seem fully into it, as if she can't really relax while competing, despite the music. Hopefully, she'll find a balance between her nerves and the style of the music as the season progresses. She gets 62.24 points.
Gracie Gold captures the passion of El Choclo perfectly, but she doubles out on the triple Flip. Because you're not allowed to jump a double in the short unless it's the double Axel, this is a mistake that will cost her. Her score: 65.39.
Even though Satoko Miyahara's music sounds a bit Irish by the end, her flamenco could be taught in school. From the red dress to the movement of her hands to her attitude, it is one of the best routines I've seen set to this type of music. She gets 65.12 points.
The first day of the girls' competition ends with the unforgettable introduction of another Russian wonder-child: Evgenia Medvedeva. Closely on her heels, ready to snatch the gold medal, are Gracie Gold and Satoko Miyahara. Don't miss the final.
