Skate Canada International 2015 - When Anything Can Happen (Ladies FS)
This may be just a Grand Prix event, but the stakes are as high as ever because the competition is fierce.Half of the ladies competing today have a chance at the podium, which means they will be ready to give their best on the ice. This is going to be a thrilling final.
Elizabet Tursynabaeva is off to a nervous start and misses the initial combination. Her prayers are heard though, and she finishes without error. Her score: 115.32. Overall: 165.16.
Isabelle Olsson dives right into Summer by Antonio Vivaldi, and that is the problem. She rushes everything, which makes her put her hand down on the first triple Lutz and both triple Salchows. She gets 91.35 points. Overall: 141.58.
I'm not quite sure what the concept behind Alena Leonova's free skate is. It seems to be about a good girl gone bad from the '60s. Technically, she double-foots the second triple Toeloop and misses the triple Salchow. Her score: 108.29. Overall: 160.37.
Veronik Mallet skates to Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor. Her presentation is overshadowed by little errors: doubles out of the triple Toeloop and steps out of both triple Loops. She gets 99.68 points. Overall: 151.85.
Maria de Buenos Aires is not an easy character to portray, but Gabrielle Daleman does a great job. The first half of the programme is a bit dull, but everything comes together in a cracking second half. Only mistake is double-footing the second triple Toeloop. Her score: 116.20. Overall: 170.33.
Everything is super intense for Elizaveta Tuktamysheva this season, but the free skate seems better put together than the short programme. It is set to Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg. The big news for her today though is that she jumps the triple Axel; it's double-footed, but she stays on her feet. She gets 133.62 points. Overall: 188.99.
Joshi Helgesson is bad-ass again, this time in Mexico. She skates to Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Las Bandidas. She falls on the triple Flip, steps out of the triple Toeloop, singles the triple Lutz and doubles out of the triple Salchow. Her score: 99.44. Overall: 155.70.
Polina Edmunds brings an American classic to the ice: Gone with the Wind. Unfortunately, she falls on the triple Flip. Very good presentation. She gets 111.84 points. Overall: 168.69.
Kaetlyn Osmond is a fighter! She's got all my respect for continuing to fight throughout this dreadful routine. She is injured too, which only adds to my admiration for her ambition today. She only gets one jump right out of eight, but there's an upside to this. It simply can't get worse, so it can only get better. Her score: 86.85. Overall: 146.06.
Kanako Murakami's skittish smile at the end says it all: she could have done better, but she hasn't done poorly. She double-foots the triple Loop and triple Flip, and singles the first double Axel. She gets 111.80 points. Overall: 171.59.
Yuka Nagai's uplifting, inspiring choice of music simply puts you in a good mood. The song is August's Rhapsody from August Rush. She steps out of the triple Flip and triple Toeloop, and singles the triple Loop. Her score: 109.57. Overall: 172.92.
Ashley Wagner is glorious today! Wearing another iconic costume resembling one worn by Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, she expresses the tragedy and beauty of her character better than any before her. She can't possibly miss the gold medal now. She gets 131.79 points. Overall: 202.52.
Congratulations to Ashley Wagner for winning her first Skate Canada. Congratulations to Elizaveta Tuktamysheva for coming back on the podium from the seventh place, and lastly, congratulations to Yuka Nagai for not only standing her ground on her first senior competition against the likes of world champions, but taking home the bronze while doing it too.
