Skate Canada International 2015 - Canadian Consistency (Pairs SP)
There are some things you can rely on in figure skating: that Canada will make a trailer for its competitions, that Canadian fans are extraordinary and, lately, that Canadian pair skaters are going to smash their rivals wherever they go. Welcome to Skate Canada International 2015, the pairs' short programme.
We start the competition with the first outing of a brand new partnership: Melissa Castelli/Mervin Tran. The two skate to Summertime by B. Walsh. Their side-by-side triple Salchows are slightly out of synch, but otherwise, this is a decent programme. Their score: 61.85.
Vanessa Grenier/Maxime Deschamps skate to Por Una Cabeza. Despite the fact that this is one of the most famous tangos of all time, they fail to express its sweet melancholy or even the passion of the dance. Plenty of errors too: he barely catches her out of the triple twist, she puts a hand down on the thrown triple Salchow and also singles the side-by-side triple Toeloop. They get 45.45 points.
It makes such a difference when skaters make an effort to look flawless! Vera Bazarova/Andrei Deputat's Nocturne costumes are gorgeous. She puts a hand down on the side-by-side triple Toeloops, but the rest of the routine is alright. Their score: 57.02.
Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro are an exciting team. They have a lot of chemistry and Etta James' If I Can't Have You brings it out. They get 63.17 points.
Well, at least they're trying. Valentina Marchei/Ondrej Hotarek attempt to up their game by jumping triple Lutzes, but fail quite miserably. Don't give up - it's just the start of the season. The music is Mourir d'Amour by Marianna Ritaldi. Their score: 54.00.
Miriam Ziegler/Severin Kielfer skate to Bjork's Oh So Quiet. Flashbacks to Ice Princess, anyone? I love the idea, but she falls on the thrown triple Flip. The mistake is a bit of a comedy act: she trips, then loses her balance, than falls. I wonder if the music gets in the way in moments like these - there is a lot going on in the song as Miriam falls. They get 49.95 points.
How can you not love Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov's Lord of the Dance? Awesome costumes, beautiful music and great choreography with actual Irish dance steps. Also, their triple twist is insanely high. Their score: 64.00.
I thought Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford didn't do romantic songs. I'm so glad they changed their minds. It's hard to be objective because Your Song is one of my favourite songs ever, but I don't really have to be. They are fantastic - despite his hand down on the side-by-side Lutzes - and no one can say otherwise. They get 72.46 points.
So, Canada takes first and third position after the short, with Russia in between. No surprises here, but then again, I never expected them to be. I'm pretty confident the final will end the same way, but don't miss it, just in case. This is figure skating, after all.
