Cup of China 2015 - Of a Quad Lutz (Men's SP)
The man's event in Beijing doesn't seem set up to produce any major surprises, but past experience has taught us figure skating is often disguised as a certainty, only to end in shocking results.
We start with someone I don't know skating to a song I've never heard of: Grant Hochstein and Due Tramonti by Ludovico Einaudi. The music is beautiful and the presentation, delicate. Unfortunately, he messes up the quad and steps out of the triple Toeloop. His score: 74.27.
I don't know what happened When Michael Met Mozart, but when Nan Song met Beijing 2015, he aced it. Love the intricate choreography and how it mirrors the many nuances of the music. The only mistake is doubling out of the triple Toeloop. He gets 76.46 points.
It used to be that when a new Russian skater made his debut, alarm bells would ring in our heads. That's not the case here with Moris Kvitelashvili, who falls on the triple Axel and steps out of both the quad and the triple Toeloop. It's a shame because I love his dorky presentation. His score: 66.92.
Classy Elladj Balde skates to Echoes of Harlem by Duke Ellington. He triples out of the quad, falls on the triple Axel and doubles out of the triple Toeloop. He gets 64.68 points.
I'll always have high expectations of Ivan Righini because of his amazing acting skills, but I have to say, as far as the short goes, I liked last season's more. Maybe it's because the mistakes overshadow the presentation - he falls on both the quad and triple Toeloop. His score: 68.98.
Michael Christian Martinez has chosen a dramatic piece of music: Egmont Overture by Ludwig van Beethoven. He falls rather awkwardly on the triple Axel, but otherwise does better than expected. He gets 72.24 points.
What did I say about surprises at the beginning of this event? I might have well said Boyang Jin because the Chinese comes from nowhere and lands not only a quad Lutz in combination (emphasis on the Lutz), but a second quad Toeloop as well. His score: 90.05.
Richard Dornbush feels the pressure of the shockingly good performance of the Chinese, and falls on the quad. The mistake on the triple Axel is not necessarily his fault as the skate gets caught and prevents him from jumping. He gets 70.21 points.
Han Yan seems to try his best to smile throughout the routine, but it comes out as more of a grimace, probably because of the fall on the quad. I said this again and I'll say it a million times more: he just needs to get a little bit sillier to ace the interpretation. His score: 73.97.
This is not a good night for the triple Axel - Misha Ge joins the list of skaters who fall on it. His presentation is not at its usual flamboyant level either. He gets 69.13 points.
Butterflies and Hurricanes by Muse suits Sergei Voronov like those tattoo sleeves he's wearing. I really like the routine and he truly knows how to make it his own. Strong technically too. His score: 80.99.
As you know, Javier Fernandez might know a thing or two about Malaguena, which is why this is a very clever musical choice. He has the charisma and strength to make it outstanding. He gets 93.19 points.
Sure enough, there's a shock at the end of the short programme and it comes from the host itself. Boyang Jin topped everyone's technical score, but still ended second to Javier Fernandez due to the presentation. If he manages to keep up the great performance in the long programme, he's definitely going to get a medal.
