Rostelecom Cup 2015 - Russia vs. Russia (Pairs' SP)

The pairs' short programme is the third event of the competition. Historically, this has been the least prone to surprises from the four disciplines of figure skating, and today is unlikely to change that. There are simply no pairs on the list who can shockingly defeat Stolbova/Klimov or Kavaguti/Smirnov or even Peng/Zhang. The centre-rink battle, therefore, will be held among these three power houses.

We're off with a brand new pair: Hayleigh Bell/Rudi Swiegers. I'm not sure their music, November Rain by Guns and Roses, is very 'skatable.' The first half of the song seems hard to follow because of the monotonous pace of the music; the second has a lot more nuances. He falls on the triple Toeloop. Their score: 46.53.

I have to say I'm not as excited about Natalja Zabijako/Alexander Enbert's routine as everyone else. Maybe it's because I don't understand Russian (although that's never stopped me before), but I find their song very disengaging. They are really good technically. They get 60.77 points.

Valentina Marchei/Ondrej Hotarek haven't had the luckiest of seasons - they had to withdraw from Skate Canada International. They are doing better in Moscow with zero mistakes and a lovely presentation of Mourir d'Amour. Their score: 62.43.

It looks like the bad luck has been transferred to Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro, hopefully just for today. After some considerable shaking in the lift, they both fall on the thrown triple Loop. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes the boy puts so much effort into throwing the girl, he loses his balance. They get 51.97 points.

Tarah Kayne/Daniel O'Shea now have a chance to climb up a step after the Canadians' small fiasco. She double-foots both jumps, but their entrances into and exits out of the main elements are innovative. Good chemistry too. Their score: 58.78.

Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov finally found a song that's not classical, but still suits them perfectly. Very classy performance, just like them. This sure looks like a fabulous way to celebrate her 34th birthday. Happy birthday and many, many happy returns! They get 71.70 points.

Cheng Peng/Hao Zhang never disappoint me with their choice of costumes - they're not only elegant, but the colours always compliment each other too. Their music is Norwegian Wood by Paul McCartney, and it is skated as a tango. Unfortunately, she falls during a transition. It's so sudden though, you almost think it's part of the choreography. Their score: 68.10.

I don't know what happened to Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov at Skate America, but it's completely out of their system now. They're on fire tonight, skating to the very sexy I Put a Spell on You by Annie Lennox. Very appropriate song for their style. They get 75.45 points.

It's settled then...for now. Seduction in the form of Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov win tonight, but emotion, aka Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov, still has a chance to win the gold. As predicted, Peng/Zhang are on third. Stay tuned for the final.
