NHK Trophy 2015 - When the Student Overpasses the Master (Ladies' SP)

Three weeks ago, in Beijing, Mao Asada was almost defeated by a younger Japanese skate. This time, she has another fierce co-national to face, and Satoko Miyahara seems more than capable to take her on. What about Ashley Wagner and Anna Pogorilaya?

The first to skate here in Nagano is Kaetlyn Osmond. Life is still a little blue for her as she falls on the triple Lutz and doubles out of the triple Toeloop. Nonetheless, it's an improvement since last time we saw her. Her score: 57.07.

Mariko Kihara skates to Sakura Sakura, showing us a fully Japanese programme. The music is inspiring and the choreography is beautiful. She's got potential, even though she falls on the second triple Toeloop. She gets 54.96 points.

Maria Artemieva looks very elegant, despite the simplicity of the gray and pink dress. The style matches beautifully with Etta James' At Last. She falls on the triple Lutz though. Her score: 55.68.

Zijun Li's programme is very tranquil. Despite one of the songs being La Polka de Paris, there is no alert rhythm here, just a beautiful soft melody she follows with her arms. Difficult entry into the triple Axel from the Ina Bauer position. She gets 60.78 points.

Mirai Nagasu  sure leaves a mark today in Nagano. Her music, a softer cover of Demons by Imagine Dragons, fits her very well. Her jumps are strong, fast and quite high today, not to mention flawless. Her score: 61.10.

Mao Asada is not having a good day. She falls on the triple Axel and singles the triple Lutz. Love her transitions, full of little jumps that match the sharp, almost fragmented rhythm of Bei mir bist du schoen. She gets 62.50 points.

Courney Hicks skates to The Feeling Begins by Peter Gabriel. Steady spins, keeping the pace of the music, with some original positions. However, she ends just a little bit behind the music. Her score: 65.60.

Alena Leonova's step sequence is a pure comedy act, which is why it must be quite tiresome. No wonder then that she falls on the triple Flip right after. She gets 59.63 points.

Not all programmes can create an atmosphere, but Ashley Wagner's Hip Hip Chin Chin turns the competition into a party for a few minutes. She gets the crowd clapping to the rhythm of the music, never losing her smile despite the mistakes. She over-rotates the triple Flip and only manages a double Toeloop in the combination. Her score: 63.71.

It really looks like Anna Pogorilaya hurt herself today. She falls three times - on the triple Toeloop, triple Lutz and during a transition. All of the falls are really nasty, so I hope she's alright if maybe quite bruised. She gets 47.35 points.

Satoko Miyahara aces her Firedance routine. She never drops the confidence and poise from her face, nor should she as every single move is perfect. Lovely red costume, befitting the Spanish flavour of the music. Her score: 69.53.

It sure feels like the student overpasses the master at the end of the short programme, even though Satoko Miyahara and Mao Asada don't have this type of relationship. I'm sure though that Mao is someone Satoko has admired for a long time. We shouldn't place our bets yet, of course. The Olympic medalist is bound to get a medal in the final, even if it's not the gold. Congratulations to Courney Hicks for her surprisingly high result as well. Here's hoping it stays the same after the final.
