Cup of China 2015 - Italian Flare (Short Dance)

Cup of China sets off as the first important competition of the season for not just two big names, but four: Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte of Italy and Elena Ilinykh/Ruslan Zhianshin of Russia. I'm very curious about their new routines, and I can't wait to see how they perform against the USA's best.

Yue Zhao/Xun Zheng's routine looks taken straight out of a fairytale. I love his green velvet costume, but not so much her dress (it doesn't look as sophisticated). Good twizzles and lift, even though the latter isn't very difficult. Their score: 51.02.

Shiyue Wang/Xinyu Liu's short dance takes a whole different direction. Their costumes look more fit for a Latino song, and although the song is one of the best ever written (Piano Man by Billy Joel), they do not interpret its sadness at all. They get 50.64 points.

Federica Testa/Lucas Csolley's presentation is miles away from that of the Chinese. The Slovaks are graceful and elegant, a gentleman and his lady at a high-class party in the '50s. They need to work on the sharpness of their step sequence and elements though - he messes up the twizzles and the lift is too long. Their score: 53.90.

For half of their programme, Elena Ilinykh/Ruslan Zhiganshin really capture my interest - Somebody to Love works wonderfully with the Ravensburg Waltz - but then they change the tune to We Will Rock You and they lose me completely. I feel that this is again an instance of skaters wanting to be innovative, but ending up being just plain weird. They get 63.54 points.

Kaitlin Hawayek/Jean-Luc Baker take a trip to the ballet. Very good presentation and choreography set to The Nutcracker by Tchaikovski. Their score: 58.35.

Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte are back! The timing of the choreography to The Merry Widow is simply amazing. Her dress is also gorgeous, somehow perfect for her character if you've got the right imagination. They get 66.39 points.

Madison Chock/Evan Bates might have accidentally thrown some ice at a judge before the start, but I'm sure that won't affect the score. I have to say they are sloppier than in Milwaukee - the twizzles have issues for just a moment, but that's enough to differentiate them from their rivals. Their score: 65.35.

It looks like the wait is over - Cappellini/Lanotte seem to be back to their indestructible selves, but we can't forget that Chock/Bates had an error today. If they are flawless in the free, they can still take the gold, and easily, as they are a bit over 1 point away.
