Skate Canada International 2015 - A Change in the Wind (Free Dance)

The waltz part of this event left us dreaming about handsome princes spinning their ladies in brilliant ballrooms, but the competition gets real tonight. Canada, the US and Russia are the top three couples right now. Will their order change?

Elisabeth Paradis/Francois-Xavier Ouelette skate to the peaceful Bridge Over Troubled Water. Their minimalist outfits go very well with the style of the music. Their score: 83.28. Overall: 131.05.

Another simple routine, from Laurence Fournier Beaudry/Nicolaj Sorensen. Their is more dramatic, but the lifts and step sequence could be more difficult. He messes up the twizzles again. Unluckily, he also cuts his finger. They get 81.29 points. Overall: 134.94.

This is the first time Ksenia Monko/Kirill Khaliavin have stood out for me. The routine is dark, but uplifting, modern, but epic. The lifts are daring even though they are not very complicated. Their s90.13. Overall: 147.57.

The sweet and romantic Alexandra Paul/Mitchel Islam make the public roar with cheers. The lifts are better than yesterday's, and the programme itself is sophisticated and classy. They get 86.37 points. Overall: 143.92.

I love the way Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri combined the soundtracks of Schindler's List and W.E. The two pieces seem like one. Their score: 93.45. Overall: 154.74.

Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev are doing soundtracks again - this calls for celebration as they're at their best on this type of music. They've had a lot of time to prepare this routine as it was supposed to be last season's free dance until he got injured. Good to see them back. They get 96.73 points. Overall: 161.11.

This might just be Maia Shibutani/Alex Shibutani's season. Correction, I hope this is their season. Both their routines are exceptional; Fix You in particular is mind-blowing. The speed, the difficulty of the elements, the combination of softness and intensity... The twizzles sync perfectly with the alert part of the music. No wonder the crowd roars. Their score: 102.36. Overall: 168.36.

Anybody else feels Kaitlyn Weaver/Andrew Poje's routine puts the current state of the world in perspective? It channels the darkness and the hope in an intoxicating  combination. I'm glad they're doing new lifts. The music is On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter and Run by Ludovico Einaudi. They get 105.79 points. Overall: 173.79.

Well, I do believe there is a valuable lesson to be learnt from this season's Skate Canada. It's that this is the time for contemporary music and creative concepts to shine. When comparing the Canadians' and Americans' programmes to the Russians', you can't help but feel that, as good as it is (and it's really good), the latter looks old-fashioned, which decreases its value. Congratulations to all three couples though for making this a beautiful, unforgettable night.
