Trophee Eric Bompard 2014 - Short Dance
After defeating the world champions merely two weeks ago, France's new ice dance couple, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, are certain to win their first French Grand Prix gold in Bordeaux. The second and third places will most likely go to Canada and the US.
Paso doble doesn't get more authentic than Sara Hurtado/Adria Diaz's version. They know exactly what it is about, being from Spain and all, so it makes me wonder if his strange pants are how a toreador's pants should really look like. Their score: 57.64.
Alexandra Paul/Mitchell Islam are amazingly fast, which makes their routine masterful and difficult. My only problem with them is that they do the same circular lift in every short programme. They get 55.17 points.
Last time we saw Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri, they were close to disastrous. Their paso doble is much improved here, especially on the mirrored twizzles. Their score: 56.57.
Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue's poor choice of costumes would affect them were they not so good at interpretation. Because the music changes in pace, it's very important that they adjust their speed to it, and they ace it. The twizzles, however, are out of sync from start to finish. They get 60.19 points.
Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron have rekindled the flame of ice dance in France. They could use a bit more detail on their costumes though, and the twizzles are not so good, but it's enough for the competition here. Their score: 64.06.
I'm not sure that Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier's presentation isn't a bit too much. I love the interpretation, but her cape makes her look more like Dracula than a Spanish dancer. Also, as gorgeous and innovative as it is, the costume looks awkward on the ice. You feel like she will be enmeshed in it at any given time. Still, strangely enough, it looks incredibly good too. They get 61.90 points.
France is not disappointed with Papadakis & Cizeron's performance, but for me, Gilles and Poirier have stolen the show despite being only on second place. Hubbell and Donohue finish third.
