NHK Trophy 2014 - Pairs' Free Skate
Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford's supremacy in the pairs' event seems tough to interrupt, but Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov are not famed for being the most lyrical pair for no reason. Let's see if they manage to get ahead and if Xiao Yu/Yang Jin are ready for their first Grand Prix Final ever.
Dee Dee Leng/Simon Shnapir never take their eyes off each other, which not only proves they have great chemistry, but also makes the presentation of Miss Saigon more believable. They mess up every jump except the thrown triple Salchow. Their score: 92.33. Overall: 138.24.
Mari Vartmann/Aaron van Cleave's Concierto de Aranjuez is lovely presented, but I'd love to see them push themselves a bit more and do some dance steps; this is Spanish music, after all. They have a couple of mistakes, mostly dodgy landings and lack of synchronicity. They get 96.67 points. Overall: 145.36.
Vera Bazarova/Andrei Deputat are having a rough career start. There are so many mistakes of all sorts that it distracts you from the presentation. Strangely enough, they're mostly hers; she doesn't seem able to land a single jump properly. Their score: 106.08. Overall: 164.70.
Xiaoyu Yu/Yang Jin skate on Humility and Love. It's a beautiful routine, so elegant and carefully presented. An uncharacteristic mistake for them is the loss of balance in the last spin. They get 121.85 points. Overall: 182.00.
Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov's performance is unusually flawed. I hope I'm wrong, but this looks just like their programmes from a couple of seasons ago when they seemed to have lost their focus. She falls on both the triple Toeloop and the thrown Quad Salchow. The last lift on one foot though, is otherworldly. Their score: 119.00. Overall: 183.60.
Thrown quad Salchows are having a bad day. Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford don't pull theirs off either. She also steps out of the thrown triple Lutz. They get 127.08 points. Overall: 199.78.
And thus the last three pair places of the Final have been occupied by Canada, Russia and China. Congratulations to all the medalists! I can't wait to see them in Barcelona.
