Rostelecom Cup 2014 - Pairs' Final
There's a lot to be proud of in the pairs' event if you're Russian, or if your favourites are any of the top three pairs, for that matter. Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov are unlikely to move from their first place, as are E. Tarasova and V. Morozov from their second. Thirdly, K. Astakhova and A. Rogonov might just take a medal at their first senior competition.
Maybe it's because they're a new pair, but Dee Dee Leng/Simon Shnapir's routine is not ambitious at all - they attempt only a thrown double Loop. They also fall on the side-by-side triple Salchows, lose unison in the side-by-side spins and she puts the hand down on the thrown triple Salchow. The theme choice, Miss Saigon, was clever though because they couldn't look their parts better. Their score: 83.26. Overall: 128.68.
It's not looking good for Narumi Takahashi/Ryuichi Kihara. Something has definitely happened in the past two seasons to her because she just can't land the side-by-side jumps. They look quite uptight together as well, more like business partners than friends. They get 84.92 points. Overall: 132.60.
Annabelle Prolss/Ruben Blommaert look slightly awkward as they do all the dance moves blank-faced. There are plenty of technical mistakes too. Their score: 96.47. Overall: 145.16.
Jessica Calalang/Zack Sindhu fail at basically all the individual elements, but the thrown jumps are amazing. In terms of choreography, the final pose seems to last forever so that's something they could add more detail to. They get 106.58 points. Overall: 157.45.
Haven Denney/Brandon Frazier's The Lion King is an ingenious routine theme-wise, but there are no elements standing out from the rest of the pairs competing here. They can't stay in unison in the side-by-side spins and the jumps aren't clean. Their score: 110.79. Overall: 164.85.
I believe Kristina Astakhova/Alexei Rogonov are the first to skate on The Master and Margarita. He is so domineering in his role as the devil, which is why in my opinion, he steals the show. He's also very strong and saves the second-to-last lift from what seems like a certain disaster. Fantastic costumes as well. They get 106.52 points. Overall: 164.86.
Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov take turns with the falls until the only landed jump is the thrown triple Salchow. Artistically, their routine is nowhere near as spectacular as that of the Russians who performed before. Their score: 106.58. Overall: 173.78.
Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov's Notre-Dame du Paris costumes are appalling. Alright, maybe that's an exaggeration. His is alright, but that gray dress is not something Esmeralda would wear. That being said, this is hands down the best free skate they've ever had. It's got so much artistry, and the way they handle the elements looks unbelievably effortless. They get 142.88 points. Overall: 211.97.
Russia can rejoice. They've got one of the best pairs in the world in Stolbova/Klimov, and all their pair skaters win a medal at their own Grand Prix event. Congratulations to all the medalists.
