Skate Canada 2014 - Ladies' Free Skate.

Out of the two Russian stars skating in Kelowna, Anna Pogorilaya was the one to finish the short on first place. The more experienced Alena Leonova had to settle for the third place after Ashley Wagner's phenomenal skate led the American to the second position. On fourth, Japan's wonder-child, Satoko Miyahara is more than qualified to advance and take the bronze medal.

I don't think Courtney Hicks is portraying Anna Karenina accurately. This is after all, the tragic story of a glamorous woman who loses everything for the love of the wrong man. Technically though, Courtney is really good and I really like her original position in the last spin. Her only mistake is a fall on the triple Lutz.  Her score: 118.15. Overall: 174.51.

Alaine Chartrand is better at interpreting an equally complex story: Dr Zhivago. She pays special attention to details such as following her arm movements with her eyes. However, she is not as good technically, with several double-footed jumps and a hand down on the triple Loop. She gets 99.16 points. Overall: 156.22.

Rika Hongo comes close to presenting Carmen with the necessary passion and angst, but doesn't quite get there. Or maybe it's just that I've seen so many Carmens, nothing but spectacular will impress me. Either way, the choreography is spot on and she only has one mistake - a hand down on the triple Salchow. Her score: 112.37. Overall: 171.47.

Satoko Miyahara is the next star of Japanese figure skating. Her routine, set to Miss Saigon, is simply beautiful. Her transitions are well-thought of to represent Japanese culture and her elements are flawless. She gets 121.53 points. Overall: 181.75.

I honestly don't understand why Aleona Leonova collapses under pressure. She is an insanely good actress on ice and has plenty of experience. When it comes to the technical though, everything's a gamble. Today, there's too many mistakes: stepping out of three jumps, a hand down on the triple Salchow and an over-rotated triple Flip. Her score: 101.61. Overall: 164.15.

It's nice to finally see a Moulin Rouge programme focusing solely on Satine rather than on the romance. And Ashley Wagner is a fine replacement for Nicole Kidman (though no one really can replace her). This is going to be a magnificent routine by the end of the season. She gets 122.14 points. Overall: 186.00.

Stravinski's Firebird is a superb piece of music and Anna Pogorilaya only helps enhance its beauty. I love the way her costume looks like flames are burning all around her when she glides across the ice. Her score: 126.53. Overall: 191.81.

At the end of this free skate, Anna Pogorilaya and Ashley Wagner maintain their first and second positions, but Alena Leonova is brutally removed from the podium and replaced by the graceful Satoko Miyahara. Congratulations to all the winners.
