Trophee Eric Bompard 2014 - Free Dance

Tonight's dance final will surely be a preview of the epic battles we'll witness in years to come, as all the top couples competing here have what it takes to become tomorrow's superstars. Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron might even achieve that status tonight if they manage to win the French Grand Prix. As for Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier versus Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, their countries' rivalry has been taking figure skating to a new level for years now, and there's no reason for them not to continue the tradition.

Rebeka Kim/Kirill Minov are still too fresh on the senior stage to pull off that vital chemistry that have made other Phantom of the Opera routines mind-blowing. They also have a mishap here as she falls out of the blue during a transition. Their score: 70.29. Overall: 115.95.

I'm still waiting for Alexandra Paul/Mitchell Islam's breakthrough moment. I used to think it might be brought about by more daring routines, but I'd hate them to lose their lovely style. So what they actually need to do is try more difficult elements. They get 83.82 points. Overall: 138.99.

Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri have set their long programme to Irish music. It's a great theme, which they keep throughout the routine, but some of their transitions don't have a lot of content in them, especially during the slower part. Their twizzles are also messy today. Their score: 85.72. Overall: 142.29.

Sara Hurtado/Adria Diaz have chosen to skate to the definition of love...literally. It's an innovative idea, but the poet's voice speaking in the background gets in the way of the interpretation at times. This is another case of the word rule being taken a step too far. They get 88.46 points. Overall: 146.10.

Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue's routine would make an interesting debate subject. It says they're doing The Great Gatsby, and surely enough the music is the soundtrack of the film, but they are not telling the story, not for a single second. So although I'm excited to see an original approach, I feel a bit cheated. Their score: 91.92. Overall: 152.11.

Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes programme is filled with class and elegance. Her twizzles though are not having a good day today. I also have a feeling that the rotational lift might be too long. They get 95.68 points. Overall: 157.58.

Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron's lyricism is quite something. We haven't seen French skaters do classical music in quite some time, but I get a feeling they'll set the tone from now on. That's how good they are. Their score: 102.60. Overall: 166.66.

Watch out Barcelona, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are coming your way with a brand new personality. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier are also growing into their own personal style, but the title of most unique has to go to the bronze medalists, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue. Congratulations to them all.
