Rostelecom Cup 2014 - Pairs' Short Programme

So far, the pairs' category has been the most faithful to skaters' reputation. And if there is one pair who can keep their heads in the game, it's Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov. However, after what just occurred in the ladies' short, I won't try to predict what place they'll lend after the short. I'll just wait and see what happens.

This is the season of break-ups and new partnerships. Dee Dee Leng/Simon Shnapir are another recently formed pair and it shows. Theirs is a decent routine, but it's filled with errors. Their score: 45.42.

Kristina Astakhova/Alexei Rogonov are also making their debut here, but they show great chemistry. More importantly, they sell the raunchy sexiness Be Italian is all about. The only problem is the lack of synchronicity in the side-by-side spins. They get 58.34 points.

Bossa Nova is one of the most energetic musical styles in the world, but you wouldn't guess it by watching Narumi Takahashi/Ryuichi Kihara. I can't even tell if they like their own musical choice, honestly. They sure don't show it. Their score: 47.68.

There's nothing special about Annabelle Prolss/Ruben Blommaert's Oh mio babbino caro. Presentation wise they're pleasant to watch, but every single element, from the thrown triple Flip to the side-by-side spins, has a small mistake. They get 48.69 points.

Selections from My One and Only is the type of music you put on a show for. Jessica Calalang/Zack Sindhu are too preoccupied with the elements though to do that. They are also out of sync in the side-by-side spins, and he steps out of the triple Salchow. I do believe this has potential, but to paraphrase Effie Trinket, chins up, smiles on next time. Their score: 50.87.

I can see Robin Szolkowy shining through his students, Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov. They're so dramatic you think they might burst into tears any moment. Lots of accuracy in the jumps too, but they're not in unison in the side-by-side spins. They get 67.28 points.

For romance to look genuine, skaters have to strip themselves of inhibitions and flirt with each other. Haven Denney/Brandon Frazier aren't quite there, but they have a good chemistry which makes their Speak Softly My Love believable. The same can't be said about their technical side; for a second there, she looks like dangerously out of control in the side-by-side spins, almost like a humming top. Their score: 54.06.

Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov put a lot of effort into making sure their routines are unique. This season their short is set to the soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Their costumes are stitch perfect, and technically, they add difficulty to the death spiral with some graceful arm movement from Ksenia. They get 69.09 points.

Bringing some karate fierceness on the ice, Stolbova and Klimov take the lead. The other two top positions are occupied by Tarasova and Morosov, and Astokhova and Rogonov.
