Trophee Eric Bompard 2014 - Ladies' Final

Less than a point; that is the difference between two of Russia's most successful skaters: Elena Radionova and Julia Liptniskaia. With so little standing between them, they will both have to keep their wits about them if they want to win. More so as every mistake they make will be a boost forward for the magnificent Ashley Wagner.

Laurine Lecavelier, the host's pick, is first to go. Her music is beautiful, but the interpretation lacks conviction. Technically, her biggest mistake is the fall on the double Toeloop, but there are lots of smaller mistakes too. Her score: 95.51. Overall: 139.54.

Funny Girl is a big theme for someone as new on the scene as Veronik Mallet to perform flawlessly. I commend her, however, on her effort on choosing the costume and those tap dance moves from the step sequence. She gets 94.57 points. Overall: 139.64.

Eliska Brezinova is feeling better on French ice than she did on Russian. However, despite the technical, this performance falls short of what you'd expect. The 13th Warriori is an epic story, but the way she portrays it, it's easy to feel rather bored with it. Maybe she just doesn't identify herself with this type of music. Her score: 96.01. Overall: 144.29.

Anna Ovcharova is a fan of Edith Piaf's, on whose music she skates. Her interpretation is a bit forced during the first half of the programme, the part where she's got the most difficult elements, but once they're out of the way, joy radiates on her face. She gets 83.08 points. Overall: 133.23.

Haruka Imai captures every nuance in the music of Giselle just like a true ballerina. Her biggest error is singling out on the triple Loop, but she also puts a hand down on the triple Salchow and seems to double-foot the landing of the double Toeloop. Her score: 99.98. Overall: 154.70.

Samantha Cesario doesn't mind being in the spotlight as Carmen. She eyes the judges with a determination that warns them not to undermine her. She gets 106.51 points. Overall: 161.70.

Courtney Hicks's Anna Karenina might be dressed accordingly, but that's all it has from the story. Also, her choreography doesn't really follow the music, which can make you doze off during the performance. Her score: 116.88. Overall: 172.58.

Mae Berenice Meite has changed her costume, surely because the one she used previously was from an older programme. Strangely though, I think that one fitted the music better. Her new blue dress is just too shimmery for this type of music. She gets 111.85 points. Overall: 169.46.

Maria Artemieva needs to change her costume as soon as possible - she looks like she just tumbled out of bed and took her boyfriend's shirt by accident. Also, it does strange things when she's spinning. The presentation is phenomenal otherwise. The technical, on the other hand, is a big mess: three falls out of which two are on the double Axels. Her score: 104.11. Overall: 162.49.

Ashley Wagner's Moulin Rouge gives me goosebumps. She's got the character perfectly from the red dress to the fake necklace to the tragic beauty. Unfortunately, she falls on the triple Flip. She gets 116.39 points. Overall: 177.74.

You never fell that Julia Lipnitskaia is trying too hard to grab attention. She isn't brazen, but quiet, which shines through her skating style and makes it subtly gorgeous. It also fits Romeo and Juliet perfectly. Her score: 118.39. Overall: 185.18.

In comparison, Elena Radionova's strength lies in her confidence. I am constantly baffled by how undisturbed she is by her rivals' performances. She simply goes out there and skates; she leaves all the worrying for afterwards. Let's hope she never loses that ability. She gets 136.64 points. Overall: 203.92.

Elena Radionova proves out the be the better of the Russians today, and wins the event with a plummeting score. Julia Lipnitskaia is in no way a loser as she takes the silver medal, and Ashley Wagner's superb skate gets the bronze. Congratulations to all of them.
